Leadership Coach & Keynote Speaker

Michael Covarrubias

Lead before the title. Influence before the authority.

I help rising professionals — and the companies that develop them — build the presence and influence that move careers, long before the title makes it official.

From the bench to the boardroom

Every one of these arrived after the influence did.

About Michael
Portrait of Michael Covarrubias

My career has been built on a single conviction: influence and executive presence aren't handed out with a title — they're earned by those who lead before anyone asks them to.

I trained as a computer systems engineer at Arizona State University and started out writing software. But I learned early — as a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers — that visibility and self-advocacy matter as much as technical skill. I rose from developer to IT director, then took a consulting engagement to build the mobile strategy for Arizona Public Service that changed everything. It led to roles as Enterprise Architect and then Senior Manager of Architecture and Strategy, reporting directly to the CIO — a seat that required me to earn influence with leaders far more senior than my title suggested.

From there I advised utility executives across the U.S., Canada, the UAE, Chile, Colombia, and Australia, and learned that presence translates across every culture and continent. Eventually I took ownership of a $3 million division, grew it, and sold it for $18 million. Today I serve as Vice President of Digital Data Services and Solutions at SAM.

I coach and speak because I've lived every rung of this climb — developer to director, consultant to owner, and back to enterprise executive — usually as the youngest, newest, or only Hispanic professional in the room. Helping the next generation find their voice is how I give back to the community that launched me.

Coaching

Build the presence the title hasn't caught up to yet.

I work on two fronts — with the individuals who are rising, and with the organizations developing them.

For individuals

Rising professionals

One-on-one coaching to build the executive presence, communication, and influence that move careers forward — the skills that get you taken seriously before the title makes it official.

For organizations

Leaders & teams

Partnering with companies to develop their leaders and teams, bringing the same playbook I used to grow people, win trust across cultures, and build a business that sold for $18 million.

Two talks. One throughline: own your rise.

Keynote 0101

Your Personal Boardroom

A CEO of Me Strategic Approach to Career Growth

Your career is the most important enterprise you'll ever run. I show audiences how to lead it like a CEO — setting a strategy, building a personal brand, investing in the right capabilities, and making deliberate moves instead of waiting to be chosen.

Keynote 0202

Building Influence and Executive Presence

Lead before the title, influence before the authority

Drawn from a career spent in rooms where I was often the youngest, newest, or only Hispanic professional at the table. From startup-sized teams to global boardrooms, the way you build presence is the same — this session shows you how.

Speaking & thought leadership

Four continents, one decade, fifteen-plus stages.

Beyond the keynotes, I'm a recognized technical speaker on enterprise data, AI, and the systems that run modern utilities — from the U.S. to Peru, Australia, Thailand, and Germany.
